Potable water is used primarily for human consumption and sanitary purposes such as bathing and oral hygiene. The most common sources of water for treatment to be used as potable water are ground water and surface water. Surface water's include lakes, rivers, streams, oceans and seas.
The later two sources require a much more thorough treatment process than the other sources because of the salt content. The treatment process for surface water and ground water is relatively simple and includes organic removal, disinfection and suspended solids removal. In some instances the water may require softening if there are carbonates present. The most common carbonate causing water "hardness" is calcium carbonate.
