A critical function of petroleum refining is the ability to match the yield from crude oil distillation with product demand from the marketplace. In general, crude distillation yields a heavy product slate while the marketplace demands a much lighter product slate. Conversion of heavy products to light products is accomplished through the use of "cracking" operations.
